There are several encodings for the Cyrillic alphabet (Windows, DOS, transliterated, Mac, etc.), but none is as widespread as KOI8-R, which is used on all Russian newsgroups. Using a single standard for our web-based publications improves database compatablility, speeds up searches and increases productivity. This means that to display Russian text and to enter queries in the searchable archives of Russian newspapers on this site, the user's computer needs:

KOI8 FONTS IN NETSCAPE
NAVIGATOR
Netscape handles foreign languages through its Document Encoding Option. Simply set-up Navigator to use the proper fonts with different Document Encodings. Once the initial set-up is complete for each document encoding you need, switching between languages and encodings is as simple as a pull-down menu. Unless you want to change font style or sizes you will not need to open the general preferences again. Instruct Netscape Navigator to use KOI8 fonts for KOI8-R coding.
*Font style and size are a matter of personal preference, and you may experiment with these settings and fonts. You can use other KOI8 fonts. |

KOI8-R KEYBOARD DRIVER
for Windows (with "Native" and "Student" layouts) CyrWin is a shareware keyboard driver that allows you to type Cyrillic in any program - email, word processor etc. If you don't already have a keyboard driver capable of Cyrillic KOI8 coding, you should download and install CyrWin. Download "KOI8KBD.EXE" (31K Archive) to your computer's \WINDOWS directory; It must be in the /Windows directory to work properly.
LAYOUT NAME: Select either the "Native" or "Student" keyboard layouts within CyrWin.
SWITCH KEY: This is the "Hot Key" that you will press to switch between Cyrillic and English. To remove KOI8-R TrueType Fonts use standard MS Windows procedure for deleting fonts. To remove Cyrwin delete the following files from \WINDOWS directory: CYRWIN.EXE, ALTKBD.DLL, KOI8_RU.KBD, KOI8_ST.KBD |
